2011 Conference
Missouri Council for History Education

Quality, Quality, Quality—always good—
better than some National Conferences!”

These and similar sentiments were expressed by the one hundred and twenty-three history educators who attended our sixth state conference designed to improve history instruction.

On Thursday’s session, Dr. David Wheelock, Vice President of the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank compared the current economic downturn, those of recent memory, and the Great Depression. In the words of one conference participant: “The information was provided in a clear and very understandable manner. An often-difficult topic to follow became very easy to understand. I am pleased!” Another exclaimed: “Now I understand – light bulb came on!” Find out what they are talking about-the youtube video can be found below.

On Friday’s session, Dr. Robert Bain of the University of Michigan helped teachers understand that history teachers are also literacy teachers. His insights and suggestions were well crafted to make participants more effective teachers.

Breakout sessions enhanced teachers’ knowledge base as well as offered lessons that can be put to immediate use in the classroom. As expressed by one of the enthusiastic participants, “Very helpful for the classroom teacher. It helped me broaden my perspective and gave me new ideas and approaches for teaching.”

This high-quality conference was made possible through the support of a number of generous sponsors. The Missouri Council for History Education is indebted to The Missouri Humanities Council, the Economic Education Department of the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank, The History Channel, the Missouri History Museum, The Cooperating School Districts of Greater St. Louis, and Webster University.
