2010 Conference Announced & Call for Proposals
Borderlands: Regional Encounters and Forgotten Histories
September 24-25, 2010
Doubletree Hotel & Conference Center, Springfield, MO
Juliana Barr, Professor of History, University of Florida
Bob Bain, Professor of History, University of Michigan

Borderlands history investigates the history of those regions in the world where competing empires, colonial enterprises, or nations met one another. As a result, scholars often look to the borderlands to find unusual individuals and multicultural communities who are otherwise invisible to researchers. In recent years, historians of Native America have turned to the borderlands to showcase Native Americans as central, rather than peripheral, actors in the history of the Americas. The Missouri Council for History Education invites
conference attendees to redraw maps, reconsider traditional narratives, and recoup forgotten histories of the Americas and elsewhere in the world as we visit the borderlands in history.

"Exceptionally first-rate!"ť "First of Its Kind" Joint Conference - Exceeds Expectations
"Nearly two hundred history educators gathered in Blue Springs, Missouri, September 25-26 for the Joint Conference of the Missouri and Kansas Councils for History Education--the first time ever that two state councils joined forces to hold a conference, according to Cindy Stout, Executive Director of the National Council for History Education, who came from the new NCHE headquarters in College Park, Maryland to participate in this precedent-setting event. In addition to Missouri and Kansas history educators, participants came from several other states as well. Elise Fillpot came from the University of Iowa to share an exciting new program of history instruction for elementary students. Pam Mickle came from New Mexico to present a session on the Bill of Rights and to exhibit for the Bill Of Rights Institute. A Teaching American History grant director came from Arizona to join midwestern history friends. A representative of the Gilder Lehrman Institute in New York came to honor the Kansas and Missouri History Teachers of the Year.

Featured speakers, H. W. Brands and Sam Wineburg, were highlights of the conference for many participants. “The speakers were outstanding” and “Dr. Wineburg and Dr. Brands were very impressive” were typical comments. The variety and quality of breakout sessions was also applauded. As one participant wrote, “very beneficial conference with hands on practical resources I can take directly back to my classroom, AWESOME!”

The evening reception at the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum was a very popular conference event. Adjectives like “phenomenal” and “awesome” summed up the experience for many.

Building on the success of the conference, the Board of Directors of the Missouri Council for History Education is planning the 2009 conference. As the details emerge, watch for information at this site. Why not make it easy, and add this website to your Favorites?
